Discomfort in area of the spine between the base of neck to the bottom of the ribcage is considered as upper back pain.

Upper back pain can have causes that aren't due to underlying disease. Examples include inactivity, overuse, misuse (lifting boxes, holding a child), a poorly fitting backpack or sleeping in an uncomfortable position.
